MMM: Child's Play

"Preschool Collage"
12 x 16 Canvas Panel

This week's Mixed Media Monday challenge is to create a piece of art using the tools and techniques "that speak to your inner child." Not only did I love the excuse to play with some of my favorite supplies such as crayons and colored pencils, but I also used this opportunity to feature some of Kendra's preschool artwork. As you probably know, those little ones bring home a lot of stuff and although we have a wall in our home dedicated to her artwork, I wanted to do something more with some of my favorites . . .

I started with a 12 x 16 canvas which was covered in four panels (from a blank journal) that had been painted in bold colors and stamped (in relief). Next came more stamping, this time with black ink and various stamps, including the back of an eraser. I then lightly washed the whole piece with some watered-down paint before adding my collage elements from several pieces and copies of Kendra's artwork. Final touches came from smudged charcoal, crayon, pencils and plenty of glitter. It hangs from a satin ribbon and includes a few Swarovski crystal beads hung from wire on the top right.

Thank you for your time! I can't wait to see what all you kiddies did this week . . .

Hi Kristin, TRhis art board is awesomne. I wish I had thought of doing something like tis when my girls were little. We moved a lot so I don;t really have anythig left to use but I will keep this in mind for my granddaughter's artwork. I maybe able to find some of her old papers from head start or kindergarten. How did you get the holes in the canvas? This is a hard canvas, correct? I would love to figure out how to get the holes in for hanging it with ribbon. I like the look. Your pic of Kendra on here is adorable. I love how color co-ordinated she is and ever so cute. Have a good evening.

I am glad to see that Miss Kendra Ann has ATTITUDE with a capital C. At least that is how she looks in her gorgeous photo.
Yes, even for oldies like me, little ones are such an inspiration and crayons and pencils are once again familiar tools.
Your Child's Play is gorgeous, Kristin. I love the wonderful textures you have achieved.

Kristin, this is gorgeous! Love that you added some of Kendra's art work into it. I reuse a lot of the paintings my daughter brings back (but we don't want to keep) as background papers. I've always got something to hand!

This is just wonderful, Kristin! I'm sure it was wonderful to include your daughter's artwork. Was she so proud to see her work on your blog? I know my nieces were in heaven. :)

Oh wow Kristin, this is wonderful! What a fantastic way to make use to the childrens art work, I know my boys bring home so much stuff from school and day care and I hate to throw any of it away no matter how small, so I have boxes and boxes of the stuff. I bet Kendra loves this and got a real kick out of it! Brilliant work!
